Arsenal Calm over Van Persie

Arsenal chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, insists that the club will not be pressured into making a decision over Robin van Persie’s future. The Dutchman has become a firm favourite of fans who like to watch football live, this season, and the Gunners will be eager to keep 'RVP' on their books.

The Arsenal skipper is currently on Euro 2012 duty with the Netherlands, hoping to recapture the kind of form that saw him hit 37 goals for the Gunners, last term.

Van Persie’s future at the Emirates Stadium has been the subject of mounting speculation, as he enters the final year of his contract. If a new deal cannot be agreed this summer, Arsenal are likely to cash in on one of Europe’s hottest properties.

Despite the uncertainty over their key striker’s future, Gazidis says Arsenal will not be pressured into making a rushed decision.

"Robin sat down with us at the end of the season, and we had a good discussion", he told the club’s official website.

"What we agreed at that meeting was that we would keep all the discussions we had over the summer to ourselves and make announcements when it is the right time."

Arsenal lost Samir Nasri in similar circumstances, last year, and his decision to leave was vindicated by lifting the Premier League title with Manchester City. Gunners fans fear Van Persie will follow suit this summer.

A late-season charge saw Arsenal snatch a Champions League place from under the nose of rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, and Gazidis revealed that the club has big ambitions for the future, starting with retaining top players and adding to the quality of the squad this summer.

"We want to win the Premier League. We want to compete to win the Champions League. That is what we are planning for during the course of the summer, and everything we do is geared towards that”, Gazidis added.
